Wolf Eyes - 2013 - No Answer-Lower Floors

De Stijl – IND164  223.24MB FLAC

No Answer : Lower Floors catches Wolf Eyes in a state of ugly refinement. By 2013, they were no longer just the basement terror rumor, the Michigan noise unit that made blown-out electronics feel like a bad object found behind a furnace. This record is stranger because it is clearer. The sounds have room around them. The vocals are closer to the front. The dread is not buried in a mudslide. It is sitting in the chair across from you.

That clarity does not make the music friendlier. It makes it more exposed. “Choking Flies” and “Born Liar” still carry the Wolf Eyes stink of damaged circuitry, cheap horror, metal scrape, and sick-room rhythm, but the record often works by subtraction rather than overload. Instead of filling every corner with static, it lets empty space become part of the threat. The lower floors are not loud because they are crowded. They are frightening because they are vacant.

The lineup shift matters too. John Olson and Nate Young are joined here by James Baljo, and the record feels like a new room being tested for bad acoustics. Guitar, electronics, horns, voice, and percussion do not collapse into one familiar noise-mass. They stalk around each other. The result has a weird almost-rock skeleton at times, but one that has been stripped, drugged, and left under fluorescent light. Wolf Eyes had always known how to make chaos feel intentional. Here they make intention feel diseased.

De Stijl was a fitting label for this phase: enough underground credibility to understand the band’s history, enough presentation to let the album stand as more than another dispatch from the tape swamp. No Answer : Lower Floors is not a retreat from extremity. It is extremity with better lighting. That may be worse. The archive version, sitting as a FLAC file on a sparse page, preserves that cold-room feeling nicely: no mythology needed, no big explanation, just a door opening below street level and no answer coming back.
