Volksraad - 2022 - De Kampioenen Van De Tot Slaaf Gemaakte Naties

Åon Records – AON049  513.91MB FLAC

De Kampioenen Van De Tot Slaaf Gemaakte Naties has the feel of a record built out of distance: Indonesian raw black metal wearing a Dutch-language title, carrying nationalist and liberation imagery through a sound that deliberately refuses polish. Volksraad does not use rawness as a lack. Rawness is the chosen architecture. The guitars blur into heroic grime, the drums push forward with demo-tape urgency, and the vocals sit inside the storm rather than above it.

The Vothana comparison that follows this record around makes sense, not because Volksraad is simply copying a template, but because both projects understand black metal as a kind of historical trance. Long songs, triumphant repetition, blown-out recording, martial lift, and mournful melody all become part of the same machine. The six-track structure gives the album room to stretch, and that length matters. This is not a quick attack. It is a campaign.

The title translates roughly as “The Champions of the Enslaved Nations,” and that phrase gives the music its strange charge. It points toward domination, memory, revolt, and myth-making, but the record does not turn those themes into clean explanation. Instead, everything comes through atmosphere: grandeur half-buried in dirt, melody shining through distortion like a banner seen through smoke. The Indonesian track titles deepen that sense of layered identity, where colonial language, national feeling, and underground black metal grammar all collide.

As an archive entry, this is a strong example of modern raw black metal behaving like older tape culture while still living in the digital present. A sparse post, a FLAC file, a CD edition, a title with historical weight, and a sound that wants to feel both ancient and badly recorded on purpose. Volksraad’s power is in that contradiction. It reaches for epic scale without abandoning the basement. The result feels less like nostalgia than a handmade monument left out in the rain.
