Third Man Records is proud to present a truly rare musical oddity a two disc collection of primal and unhinged Greek village music that at times sounds more like free jazz or doom folk, feral and trance-like as it is. After years of research, fieldwork and collecting, Christopher King-Grammy-winning producer, sound-engineer, curator and writer- has gathered together from his private 78 rpm archive the most mind expanding and libido inducing song and dance music from the rural hinterlands of mainland Greece and its islands. Recorded between 1907 and 1960, this collection contains the first and the last-the alpha and the omega-of Greek demotika- or folk music. And it is not what you would expect.
Remastered from the original 78 rpm discs, this set contains 28 previously unissued recordings made in the cramped, primitive studios of Athens, Greece, New York, NY, and Chicago, IL. Crazed Macedonian bagpipes, keening violins, shiver-inducing zournas and shepherd-pipes are found throughout the two discs. Cover artwork is by legendary underground artist R. Crumb and designed by Grammy winning Susan Archie. A beautifully thought-provoking if not radical essay on this music by King accompanies the lavish package. Not simply for historians or collectors of long gone sounds, this compilation is intended to push the limits of what we have come to expect of music, its purpose and indeed its origin. "Follow-up to Bouzouki Joe's brilliant collection of sought-after Turkish Psyche-folk recorded in the prime period 1970-1978. Volume 2 spans another seventeen exquisitely evocative gems with numbers by the revered Baris Manco alongside lesser known album tracks and a slew of cherry-picked rarities. We're not overly familiar with the sound, but every time our mate Sean Canty plays one of these nuggets, or something similar in his various DJ slots, we're always compelled to find out what it is, and then choke at how much it cost him! This time we encounter some Moog-fuelled killers on Kerem Guney's 'Aglayi Aglayi' and Gokben's sumptuous 'Eninde Sonunda' (check that Moog wail!), next to the epic intro and dynamite funk breaks of Baris Manco's 'Estergon Kalesi' or the deadly 'Mozart'. Further into the vibe, you'll find another driving, funky Manco production on Irgat's 'Sevil and Ayla', a magical cover of Selda's 'Afet Serenay' from Maden Dagi, and the fiery Psyche rock thrust of Cem Karaca + Mogollar's 'Obur Dunya'. A BOLGATANGA GHANA COMPILATION'. This compilation is an African initiative. King Ayisoba once told Makkum Records: "I want to make the world love kologo music like Bob Marley made the world love reggae music." Most of the tracks on this album were recorded in studios in Ghana. Some are sung in Frafra, others in pidgin English. Some are with a live band and some feature just solo kologo and voice. But all the songs represent a force and unveil a very strong musical power. The connection between kologo music and (delta) blues has been made more than once and that resemblance is not written on ice; the personal and the social messages, the strong rhythms, the push that this instrument -with only two strings spanned over a goatskin on a calabash- can give to people to make sure they don't ignore the dance floor, all that makes it worth the effort of putting together at least one kologo compilation.

For their first multi-artist compilation, Music From Memory take us on a trip to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Outro Tempo: Electronic and Contemporary Music From Brazil, 1978-1992 is a double LP that explores the outer reaches of Brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where MPB mingles with drum computers. As Brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition to democracy, a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an alternative vision of Brazilian music and culture. They embraced traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their music with elements of ambient, jazz-fusion, and minimalism. At the same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of indigenous tribes from the Amazon. The music they produced was a complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked Brazilian landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its borders.

Ever since the days of Cain and Abel, many a fine murder story has gripped people's imagination. Jealousy is not the only root cause of man's murderous impulse. Greed, lust, guilt, power - any one of these, it seems, is sufficient to justify taking a human life. Every day we read of brutal murders being committed. These stories were ripped from newspaper headlines and recast into verse and recorded, often within weeks of the actual event. They became part of the repertoire of hillbilly bands, blues guitarists, jugbands, r&b and tin pan alley entertainers, bluegrass artists and calypso singers.

Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & ‘80s - a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. Spread out over two CDs and one triple LP, Kenya Special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs.It follows on from Soundway’s much acclaimed African ‘Special’ series that to date has focused on the highlife and afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana.
Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7" singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language ‘liquid soul’, Luo benga and Swahili afrobeat to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less trodden path. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time.
In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya’s unique contribution to afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with it’s fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands many of whom settled in East Africa - influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock ‘n’ roll riffs, elements of ‘afro’ music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha.
Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya’s past.

This time, you'll find interviews with quite an odd/interesting assortment of folks: Vanilla Fudge, Keith Rowe (ex-AMM), John Renbourn, and Pip Proud. Plus features and bits on psychsters old and new and heavy and obscure including Acid Mothers Temple, Debris, Stackwaddy, Rodriguez, Edgar Broughton, Uriah Heep, The Lemon Drops, Exuma, The Outsiders, etc.
And, beyond the 'zine, you get the second set of Crimewave illustrated "Damaged Guitar Gods" trading cards -- including John DuCann (Atomic Rooster), Michael Yonkers, Wally Gonzalez (Juan De La Cruz), Davy Graham, Dorothy & Helen Wiggins (The Shaggs), Erik Brann (Iron Butterfly), Erkin Koray, BoAnders Persson (Trad Gras Och Stenar) and dozens more. Pretty darn cool. Plus, that's not all: there's also a freakin' double cd compilation entitled Ascension Days When We Rise: Ultra-Rare Avant/Psych/Garage 1960's-1990. It features Acid Mothers Temple, The Heads, Six Organs Of Admittance, Miminokoto, The Hototogisu, Oneida, Michael Karoli, and a bunch more, some we've never heard of before but are eager to check out. This 'zine is just such a "turn on" regarding the underground sounds obsessed about within. Something about everything in the magazine being handwritten not only gives it more of an organic, '60s psych vibe but also utterly underscores how much of a labor of love this is, just how incredibly ENTHUSIASTIC Plastic Crimewave and Co. are about this stuff. Right on.

Follow The Sun compiles twenty cuts dug from dusty bins by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring) and Keith Abrahamsson (Founder / Head of A&R at Anthology Recordings and Mexican Summer) surveying the sought after sound of Australia’s lesser — and greater — known moments of ‘70s rock, folk, and their in-between offspring. Follow The Sun filters the sublime and sometimes subversive psychedelic airwaves transmitted around the world from America’s terrestrial platforms during the golden age of gentle, exploratory FM through a distinctly Australian lens.
Independent labels and recording studios proliferated across Australia during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, while major labels simultaneously scoured the furthest reaching corners of the continent to foster new approaches in making music. With both indies and majors ultimately compelled to uncover the almighty single, the fringe was frequently explored for “crossover” sounds. This engendered a creative freedom amongst artists that mirrored the open-ended mood of the times. Anything was possible.

Enjoy The Experience: Homemade Records 1958-1992 is the inaugural offering from Sinecure Books, the publishing company that Now-Again’s Egon co-founded with Johan Kugelberg. Packaged as a hardcover, and weighing in at 512 pages, it is the most comprehensive overview of the American “private press” movement from the latter half of the 20th Century that could possibly be assembled. We’re pleased to be distributing a 2CD/2LP anthology of psych, funk, folk, jazz, lounge, disco, boogie and just-plain-weirdness culled from the the book’s selections.
Take note: this is not a novelty freak show. Contained in this anthology are examples of some of the most highly regarded rock, soul, jazz, funk and singer/songwriter albums from the 60s through the early 80s. From the awkward-yet-talented to the genius-yet-bizarre, one thing unites all musicians presented here: they sincerely hoped to become stars, they committed themselves to record, and they left themselves vulnerable to an industry not understanding of nuance, not appreciative of character. Based on four years of fieldwork throughout the state, the florida folk life program released the two-album, 27-track lp “drop on down in florida” in 1981. the album was intended to highlight african american music traditions for a statewide public audience, blues and sacred traditions in particular. in recent years, the folklife program sought the opportunity to produce an expanded reissue of the album that would include previously unissued fieldwork recordings and photos. drawing upon extensive fieldwork materials now housed in the state archives of florida, the expanded reissue includes nearly 80 previously-unreleased minutes of music on 28 new tracks, plus numerous photos documenting the musicians and communities that perpetuated these traditions
notable among the previously unreleased tracks are additional musical selections and personal narratives from one-string musician moses williams, four-shape-note sacred harp singing from an african american community in the florida panhandle, and recordings from the richard williams family in the blues and gospel-blues traditions. the reissue also includes new track notes from respected music scholars david evans and doris j. dyen; reflective essays from past and present folklorists with the florida folklife program, including peggy a. bulger, dwight devane, doris j. dyen, and blaine waide; and an extensive essay on african american one-string instrument traditions by david evans
the 2012 edition of “drop on down in florida: field recordings of african american traditional music 1977–1980,” highlights the significance of the previously unreleased material. in addition, it calls attention to the importance of the original lp and makes its contents available once again, this time to a larger audience

The music draws from Burma’s rich vocal tradition, and the centuries-old royal repertoire of the Burmese harp and xylophone. Recorded and produced by Rick Heizman.

Originally issued last winter as a voluminous limited edition vinyl set, a big chunk of the material collected by country blues-zealot George Mitchell now is available as a 6-CD package (with a fat, fact-packed booklet), along with an added seventh bonus disc.

Catching the blues bug early and inspired by Sam Charter’s groundbreaking The Country Blues book, a teenage Mitchell spent his Christmas school break in Memphis in 1961 and, beginning with Memphis Jug Band leader Will Shade, began a 20-year odyssey recording and photographing a treasure trove of one-time stars, local legends and retired heroes of the strictly acoustic and vividly elemental idiom. It’s a hypnotic and constantly spellbinding music, especially in the hands of such exemplars of the genre as Buddy Moss, Big Joe Williams, Sleepy John Estes, Fred McDowell and Furry Lewis, to cite only a few of the more well known musicians represented here. Some of Mitchell’s discoveries, such as Jessie Mae Hemphill, RL Burnside and Othar Turner, even went on to have successful careers. It goes without saying that it’s priceless to have these great-sounding recordings in circulation rather than gathering dust in some curator’s catalogue. The music is that extraordinary.

Sub Rosa present Music From Yemen Arabia: Sanaani, Laheji, Adeni And Samar a reissue of both Music From Yemen Arabia: Samar and Music From Yemen Arabia: Sanaani, Laheji, Adeni, recorded by Ragnar Johnson and Jessica Mayer in 1973. These songs originate from the city of Sanaa, the sheikdom of Lahej and the port of Aden. Samar is the delicious, luxury time when people gather for relaxation, refreshment, and music. This record contains oudh playing, percussion, and singing from Yemen. The three Kawkabani brothers sing traditional poems and play oudh (lute), double drums, tambourine, and, occasionally, the kanoun (zither). The oudh player Hassan al Zabeede and his double drum playing brother sing songs in the Lahej style and were recorded in Taez.
