John Carpenter & Alan Howarth - (2015) Escape From New York (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) 2xLP

Escape from New York is a 1981 American dystopian action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter. The film is set in a then near-future 1997 in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Ex-soldier Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 22 hours to find the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who has been captured by prisoners after the crash of Air Force One.

Carpenter wrote the film in the mid-1970s as a reaction to the Watergate scandal. After the success of Halloween, he had enough influence to begin production and filmed it mainly in St. Louis, Missouri on an estimated budget of $6 million. Debra Hill and Larry J. Franco served as the producers. The film was co-written by Nick Castle, who already collaborated with Carpenter previously by portraying Michael Myers in Halloween.

Escape from New York was released in the United States on July 10, 1981. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $25,244,700 at the box office. It won four Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Direction. The film gained a cult following and was followed by a sequel, Escape from L.A.

Puce Mary - (2014) The Great Panic CS

Puce May, the rising project from Frederikke Hoffmeier brings us dark and brooding sounds.
The tape opens with “Another Dream on Superiority”; barely decipherable spoken word washes over a slow bass sequence and terse delay throughout. The following track, “Scaps”, it has to be said, comes across a little slap-hazard, with insistent rim shot patter sparring with heavily flanged vocals. It’s messy, but thankfully short.
There’s an outstanding martial atmosphere on the title track, and fantastic juggernaut rhythms with queasy Anenzephalia-styled vocals on “Insomnia”. “Drugs I” is perfect: lurching, gutsy analogue crunch undermining subtle upper-range improvisation. There’s a lot going on, but it’s distinct, focused and brilliant.  It’s a real highlight, and if “Drugs I” was a happy trip, “Drugs II” is chemical-induced fear and paranoia. It rounds out the tape very nicely.

Ottawa & Jihad - (1994) Split LP

Ottawa managed to mesh blast beats and infusions of hardcore to form a sound akin to the famed Tolkien “Uruk-Hai” Orcs battle cry. The music assaults the listener, while duel vocalists rained  down vicious explosions of political commentary. They were based out of Dearborn, Michigan, which to this day is a blue collar neighborhood where the Ford auto company also claims its home. Jihad, on the other hand, lumbered forth from the west side of the state, claiming  the college town Kalamazoo, Michigan at their home turf.  With a churning, bass-heavy sound and glass-swallowing vocals, Jihad was the perfect soundtrack to a man being set on fire, clawing his way across a concrete sidewalk while fighting for his very life. Separated by about three hours, on opposite ends of Michigan, they were brought together to form a colossal split album, which when released was met with glowing reviews. Even to this day, both sides of this release stand up to the test of time. Still managing to maintain the anger, brutality and relevant socio-political commentary that has become a hallmark of hardcore music.
