The 8 tracks on "Paper Glacier", the newest solo release from Chicagoan Donny Mahlmeister have a singular sonic imprint that imparts a warm hazy glow. While not fully without melodic and rhythmic propulsion, they feel like the audio equivalent of a Rothko abstraction; lines are blurred on the edges with subtly shifting phrases that jump in and out of phase.

There is a slight roughness around the edges, partially because the tracks were improvised live without overdubs or editing, but also due to the parameters of the instruments used; analog synthesizers and digital samplers that have a tendency to skew towards the noisier end of the spectrum. "Paper Glacier" shows Mahlmeister embracing more of the restraints of a lower noise floor and a lo-fi recording quality than he typically favors on other work.

Originally conceived as the score for the film Fire Underground by Nick Crockett, this music has accumulated additional meanings for me as climate change and coronavirus escalate. Nick describes Fire Underground as "a speculative fantasy which re-imagines and reinterprets the history of coal mining in the eastern United States...The project features a paleozoic coal forest deep underground, which is slowly returning to life. The forest is a kind of purgatory, but also a repository of the myths and dreams of the people living above...I’ve tried to render the past as a space for possibility, for transformation, and for a kind of communion. It is filled with danger, but also with openings and with light."

Today, with so many in isolation and gripped with worry, I offer it as a balm: a re-connection to earth in the past, present and future.
